The third American to be killed in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) was Navy SEAL Charles Keating IV.
Keating was killed while fighting alongside the Kurdish Peshmerga as part of a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) responding to a breach in the Peshmerga frontlines against ISIS.
In a recent video produced by Rudaw, the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who stood alongside Keating, praised him for how courageously he fought ISIS — a firefight that lasted nearly three hours. They said Keating defended five Peshmerga who were pinned down in the firefight with ISIS. Watch the video below.
Keating’s death is the third American combat loss since the U.S. redeployed forces to Iraq in the summer of 2014 to advise local forces and conduct Special Operations missions against ISIS. The 31-year-old Special Warfare Operator 1st Class was on his third tour in Iraq.
