When self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorists attacked Yazidi villages in northern Iraq, and killed and enslaved hundreds of Yazidis, a Yazidi woman named Vian Dakhil stood before the Iraqi Parliament and delivered a speech that the whole world would see.
Vian Dakhil is a member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, and a Yazidi woman. Her plea to the Iraqi Parliament is widely credited with inspiring the world to launch a full-scale attack on Islamic State terrorists.
National Geographic recently interviewed Vian Dakhil and asked her to reflect on her speech, which occurred a year ago, in August 2014. The video can be watched below, and features interviews with Dakhil, as well as Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Representative to the United States.
