Stories from Kurdistan

Announcing the Winners of the My Kurdistan Story Contest

Back in March, we announced the My Kurdistan Story Contest for students to answer the simple question, “why are you proud to be Kurdish?” We received dozens of powerful submissions from Kurds around the world. Here are the winning stories from the three age groups.

Winner of My Kurdistan Under 12 Age Group: 10-year-old Yasna

Yasna told us what she plans to do when she grows up, why she’s optimistic about the future of Kurdistan, and one of her favorite hobbies – painting.

Watch Yasna’s touching submission below.

Winner of 13-17 Age Group: 16-Year-Old Rozan

Rozan shared her account of a recent, terrifying trip to Kurdistan that put her life in Canada in perspective. Read Rozan’s story.

Winner of 18 & Over Age Group by public vote: 21-Year-Old Alan

21-year-old Stanford student, Alan, shared how a recent trip to Kurdistan to document the lives of young refugee children has shaped his Kurdish identity, and won The Kurdish Project’s public vote. Read Alan’s story.

Thank you to all of the students who submitted their stories as part of My Kurdistan. While the contest is now closed, The Kurdish Project is always accepting personal stories, photo essays, interviews, videos, and art projects to share with the community on a regular basis. Submit your story.
